Tips for Great Photos of LED Displays
To capture stunning LED sign photos, use Shutter Priority mode or Manual mode with a shutter speed of 1/15s to 1/125s, ISO 100-400, and aperture f/16 to f/22. Shoot in the morning or evening, avoid midday sun, and stand at the recommended viewing distance. Focus on colorful artwork and avoid background distractions for the best results.
- If your camera has a Shutter priority mode, often indicated as “Tv” or “S,” try using it. If not, switch to Manual and adjust the settings as below:
- Shutter speed- Slowing the shutter speed allows the display to refresh in time, eliminating any lines or grids in the photo. Set the shutter speed to 1/15s, 1/30s, 1/60s, or 1/125s. Hold the camera steady when using slower shutter speeds and use a tripod for speeds slower than 1/60s as a slow shutter speed increases chances of burred images.
- ISO Setting- Lower the ISO to between 100 and 400. Lowering the ISO lets less light in, compensating for the shutter being open longer.
- Aperature Setting- Set the aperature or f-stop to f/16 to f/22. The aperature also controls the amount of light that enters the camera.
- Check your distance from the display. Stand further back and if possible stand at the recommended viewing distance for the resolution.
- Avoid taking photos of LED signs at midday or in bright sunlight. Try taking photos earlier in the morning or in the evening when the sun is lower.
- Take photos of the shaded side of the sign to get a better exposure.
- Take photos of the most colorful or vivid artwork. This really shows off its capabilities.
- Avoid background distractions like power lines, cars, and other signs. A cleaner background will really help your sign stand out.
